Cancellieri Demonstrates Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that he could resign were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. They were unable to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances with the club in that campaign, almost all of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His True Position

Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the exact type of the player's talent. Labeled as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
